On the former MD site, the extensive remediation measures of the Mühlbach reach the next milestone. The detour of the stream into the temporary streambed is imminent. To complete the detour, the Mühlbach will be temporarily lowered.
On the site of the former MD paper mill, Isaria München Projektentwicklungs GmbH is developing the urban quarter Mühlbachviertel for Deutsche Wohnen. A new living space is being created, which will be characterized above all by the renaturation of the banks of the River Amper and the uncovering of the Mühlbach from extensive park and open spaces. The renaturation of the Mühlbach, its riverbed restoration and temporary relocation to a temporary streambed is one of the most costly restoration measures in Bavaria.
Mühlbach lowering from 26.09.2022
The Mühlbach will be diverted in the area between the superstructure along Ludwig-Thoma-Strasse and the existing hydroelectric power plant. For this purpose, starting on Monday, September 19, 2022, the water in the upper course near the hydroelectric power plant will be diverted slowly rising via a diversion basin into the first section of the temporary structure. In order to be able to subsequently decommission the old river course and seal off the inflow, a significant reduction in the water volume is necessary. For this purpose, the Mühlbach will have to be lowered from Monday, 26.09.2022.
The work on the inflow and outflow will cover a period of approximately two weeks. Within the course of the stream, the water level will be dammed by large sandbags at various bridges. This will create safe retreats for the fish living in the stream for the duration of the work. In the course of the lowering, the city of Dachau will carry out inspections of the bridges. All those involved, the Dachau municipal utility, the city of Dachau and Isaria are working hand in hand on this.
“This is the starting signal for the final stage of the extensive renovations. In the coming years, the industrial site will be transformed into a livable and sustainable urban quarter,” says David Christmann, spokesman for Isaria’s management, thanking all those involved for their excellent cooperation. “The topic of water already played an important role in the days of the MD paper mill. We are very pleased to make water a tangible element again in the new Mühlbachviertel through the redesign of the river landscape. At the same time, with the revitalization of the Mühlbach, we are taking advantage of the opportunity to create high-quality ecological challenges such as the cooling of urban spaces as well as the irrigation of trees.”
Renaturation of the Mühlbach
The Mühlbach will be opened up and will flow above ground in its natural form through the new quarter in the future. This will make it usable by the public in this area for the first time in over 100 years. In order to be able to start the renaturation of the river course, the Mühlbach will first be diverted into a temporary stream bed. Temporarily, the stream will run 20 meters further north. This complex measure is necessary to demolish the superstructure of the Mühlbach and to rehabilitate the river bed. In the course of the new development, the brook will return to its final bed.
